How to split rent with roommates in 4 steps

1

Enter the monthly rent

2

Add your roommates

Add a name for each person who shares the place. You can add up to 12 roommates.

3

Choose how to split the rent

Split equally, or by room size with a weight for each room. A weight of 1.2 pays 20% more than 1.

4

Check each share

The roommate rent calculator shows each share, rounded so they add up to the exact rent.

What makes a rent split fair

Room size. A bigger room usually pays a bigger share. Measure the rooms or compare them by eye, then turn that into a weight.

Private bathroom. A room with its own bathroom is worth more than one that shares. Give it a higher weight.

Storage, light and extras. A walk-in closet, a balcony or a parking spot can all be part of the weight for a room.

Shared bills. Rent is only part of the cost. Divide electricity, water and internet with the bill splitter, then keep every shared cost in one place with Giya.

Agree before you sign. Talk through the weights as a group first. A split everyone agrees to is the fairest one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split rent fairly between roommates?

If the rooms are similar, an equal split is the simplest. If the rooms differ in size or one has a private bathroom, give each room a weight. A room with weight 1.2 pays 20% more than a room with weight 1.

How does the weighted split work?

Each person pays the rent multiplied by their weight, divided by everyone's weights added together. For $1,800 rent with weights of 1.5, 1 and 1, the shares are $771.43, $514.29 and $514.28.

Does the calculator save or send my numbers?

No. The math runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

Can Giya collect rent or move money?

No. Giya tracks and splits shared costs. Settle up means recording that someone paid back. It doesn't transfer money.

Is Giya free?

Giya is free to start, with one group and up to 3 people invited by email. Premium adds unlimited groups and invites. Giya isn't in the app stores yet, so join the waitlist to hear when it launches.
